Will there be sunshine or clouds for Phil? Once again, it’s time to turn our attention to our favorite furry weather forecaster. Yep, our very special groundhog friend named Punxsutawney Phil.
Where does Phil the Groundhog live?
He lives in the state of Pennsylvania, which is one of the 50 states of the United States of America.
The state of Pennsylvania is divided into many sections: counties, townships and boroughs.
Groundhog Phil lives in the County of Jefferson in the Borough of Punxsutawney.
Who takes care of Phil the Groundhog?
There is a special group, known as the “Inner Circle” that take care of Phil all year long. On February 2nd at Gobbler’s Knob, the President and Vice President of the “Inner Circle” awaken Phil to come out of his temporary burrow. Then Phil tells his prediction to the officers. Next, one officer or “handler” proudly holds Phil high for the crowds to see him. After that, the other officer or “handler” reads Phil’s translated prediction from a scroll to the excited crowd.
What does sunshine or clouds mean for Phil prediction?
The Inner Circle, the citizens of Punxsutawney, many tourists from all over the country and world, and media crews come to Gobbler’s Knob. They eagerly await to learn if Phil’s weather prediction for the following six weeks will be a continuation of Winter or will Spring come early?
Since it can be a little confusing, I’ve used this poem to help my kiddos understand Phil’s predictions.
Therefore, if it’s sunshine Phil sees his shadow, gets scared and runs back to his burrow for six more weeks of Winter weather. By comparison, if it’s cloudy Phil doesn’t see his shadow, so he goes to play and Spring weather will come early.
