Any Day is Math Day! Part 1

any day math day 2

“Any Day is Math Day!” Part 1. In Hawaii, May 1st is celebrated as “Lei Day”. Since creating the product, “May Day is Lei Day” , all things Hawaiian have triggered many wonderful memories in my mind and heart.

My father was in the Marine Corps and we were fortunate to live in Hawaii twice. Remembering my childhood, I recall where we lived by what grade level I was attending. The initial time in Hawaii, I was repeating Kindergarten since I didn’t meet the age cut off for entering First Grade, bummer :-). Years later we returned to Hawaii, I completed seventh and eighth grade. So, enjoy this Hawaiian themed product and blog post. I am. 🙂

“Any Day is Math Day!”, Part 1 Aloha!

Any Day is Math Day Part 1 focuses on the vocabulary for Ordinal Words and Abbreviations with activity sheets as an avenue for the kiddos to demonstrate their understanding of the skills. Equally important is the vocabulary for Skip Counting. In addition, activity sheets are provided to practice and master Skip Counting skills as the precursor to multiplication for grades Kindergarten through Third Grade.

Any Day is Math Day with Vocabulary Cards

Any Day is Math Day with vocabulary cards to add to a classroom “word wall” for whole group introduction of the topic and instruction of word meanings. As you introduce the activities, use the cards to increase numeracy vocabulary. If wall space isn’t available, place the cards either in a pocket chart, glue on craft paper, glue on chart paper, or on construction paper.

The most important task is to discuss the vocabulary words in detail and have them in view of the kiddos for reference. The kiddos can write the words in their Math journals and write or draw a reference “clue” for each word. The ordinal cards can be used to label items in the classroom, hallways…etc.

Any Day for a Great Ordinal Resource

Any Day is a great day when you find an awesome Ordinal Words and Abbreviations Reference Chart for a kiddo’s Math Toolbox or for a station/center.
The source for this chart is from two teachers, one is speaking English, and the other one is speaking Korean. Their video explains the pattern of making and creating ordinal numbers 1st to 100th.

Copying options: copy 1 chart to a full sheet or if you’re low on paper (like I always am LOL) copy 2 or 4 to a sheet.

Any Day is Ordinal Activity Day

The activity sheets are designed with incomplete labeling terms for the items using either words (first thru twelfth) or abbreviations (1st-12th ) . Kiddos will write in words or abbreviations to complete the labeling.

“A” A Pail of Seashells and “B” Crab and Plumerias have the items in order for the entire sheet.
“C” Coral, Lanternfish, Ukulele, and Hibiscus use “first thru twelfth” and Coconut, Pineapple, Lei, and Hawaiian Shirt use 1st-12th to label the random order of the items.

“D” Shell, Snail, Starfish, and Seaweed use “first thru twelfth” to label the random order of the items.

For the Turtle, Coconut Tree, Hawaiian Shirts, and Leis use 1st-12th to label the random order of the items! The rows are a little tricky. Read carefully!

Each group of activity sheets are in three design options:
1. Color clipart
2. Grayscale clipart
3. Self Check in Color clipart for the kiddos (or when you can’t think to grade one more thing, LOL!)

Any Day is Skip Counting Day

Any Day is Skip Counting Day! Item Cards are designed for practicing skip counting by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, 10’s and 12’s. Moreover, a full sheet of cards can either be 15 or 30, depending on how you cut them apart. Therefore, you may either cut apart the number from the picture or keep the pair together. There is a summary chart of the items and how they are used.

How to use the cards:

  • First, the full sheet at a center/workstation will be a guide while completing the activity sheets.
  • Make additional copies and cut the cards apart. Subsequently, the kiddos take turns putting them back in order.
  • Have manipulatives available for counting, if necessary.

The ultimate goal: The kiddos will put the cards in order without using the reference sheet or manipulatives.

Cards and Activity Sheets are in color or grayscale. Three choices of each Activity Sheet: color, grayscale, or color with answers for Self-Checking.

Five Activity Versions: The kiddos will complete the missing numbers to represent the skip counting pattern.
A. Leis: counting by 1’s
B. Eyes of the snail: counting by 2’s
C. Group of pebbles: counting by 5’s
D. A pail of seashells: counting by 10’s
E. A collection of starfish: counting by 12’s
